Pieces of You Book Review

Hi Beauties,
I spent my weekend reading Pieces of You by Eileen Merriman thanks to the lovely team at Penguin. Once I starting reading, I couldn't put this down. Snuggle up, grab a cup of tea and keep on reading for my full review.

Pieces of You is about fifteen-year-old Rebecca McQuilten who moves with her parents to Auckland from Dunedin. Lonely but trying to fit in, Rebecca goes to a party where something horrific happens. Things really start to fall apart for Rebecca, until she meets her neighbour, Cory Marshall. Slowly, Rebecca begins to build her life back together but in a moment, everything shatters again. I enjoyed reading about Rebecca and Cory fall in love and it took me back to those 'first love' feelings when everything feels x10 more intense and you genuinely don't see or think about anyone else but them. I just wish they had more time. I wasn't ready to let them go.

I don't want to give much away as I feel like it will ruin the book. Overall, I really enjoyed Pieces of You once I got into it. I loved that it was set in Auckland, I felt like a could relate to Rebecca and her family since I moved around a lot as a child as well.

Pieces of You deals with very sensitive and potential trigger topics such as; Self-harm, Sexual assault and suicide. Eileen dealt with each topic in a really sensitive way but I still found some things hard to read and I wish she had gone into more detail about the importance of talking to someone, especially around the sexual assault storyline. At the end of the book, they do have a 'support services' section that outlines contact details for confidential help, advice, counselling and support services which I think is so important.

I can see this being a book that's studied in English classes around the country. It would be a great book to study and analyses the different themes. There are many different sub-plots; Rebecca's other life in Dunedin, the party, Cory and his family, and life after death.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Eileen writes next. If it's anything like Pieces of You, I'll be there.

Pieces of You is RRP $19.99  available at Whitcoulls and PaperPlus
